Canton: Lambs and Greener Pastures

15.7 miles | 1,343’ | 65% unpaved

Skip the biggest climb and discover the best of Armenia Mountain on this scenic gravel loop, featuring Tioga State Forest, Lambs Lookout, peaceful ridgelines, and a welcoming stop at Greener Pastures.

This route is a great way to experience the gravel roads of Armenia Mountain without having to make the long, steep climb directly from downtown Canton. Instead, it begins at County Bridge Park, just across the county line in Tioga County. The park offers parking, a small campground with basic campsites, restrooms, picnic shelters, and easy access to the route and nearby quiet gravel roads in all directions.

After a shorter and moderately graded climb, you'll find yourself on top of Armenia Mountain, riding some of the finest gravel roads through Tioga State Forest. The route includes two worthwhile stops along the way.

The first is Lambs Lookout, also known as Lambs Vista, a short spur off the main route with an outstanding eastward view across the surrounding valleys and enjoy a mid-ride snack at the picnic table near the overlook. The access road is gated to vehicles in winter, but bicycles are able to pass around. It's well worth the brief detour. Camping is not permitted at the overlook.

Farther north, the route passes Greener Pastures, a family-run farm, distillery, and event venue that welcomes bikepackers to camp by prior arrangement. If you're planning to stay overnight, simply contact them ahead of time. Even if you're just passing through, it's a wonderful place to stop for locally made products, ice cream on a summer afternoon, Wi-Fi, or simply to enjoy the friendly atmosphere and meet the farm animals.

From Greener Pastures, the route continues across the broad summit of Armenia Mountain before looping around the northern side. Along the way you'll pass the area's wind turbines and enjoy more of the mountain's scenic gravel roads and expansive views.

One of the biggest advantages of this route is that it lets you experience the best of Armenia Mountain’s quiet gravel roads without the sustained climb from Canton. Most of the gradual elevation gain comes in the first three to four miles, after which the route becomes a series of gentle rolling climbs before gradually descending back to County Bridge Park—a good option to dip your toes into the Endless Mountains gravel riding without a huge commitment. If you’d rather ride this route from town, check out 3.3 and enjoy the ups and downs!
