Union Dale: Chetsville, Population You

25.7 miles | 2,802’ | 79% unpaved

Discover the hills surrounding Union Dale on this punchy gravel loop featuring Elk Mountain, Chetsville, peaceful forest roads, and panoramic countryside views.

This short loop out of Union Dale punches well above its weight when it comes to unpaved roads and climbing. The route winds through forests, alongside creeks, and past working farms, with sweeping valley views and frequent glimpses of the slopes of Elk Mountain Ski Resort, one of Pennsylvania's premier ski destinations. Rising more than 1,000 vertical feet, Elk Mountain has attracted skiers and snowboarders from across the Mid-Atlantic for generations and remains one of the region's most recognizable landmarks.

Be sure to stop for a photo with the Chetsville sign—Population 26. This remote route also overlaps a short section of the Endless Mountains 430 as riders make their way back to Union Dale.

In addition to its 26 residents, Chetsville is home to Chet's Place, a popular après-ski destination during the winter. When the snow is good at Elk Mountain, the population of Chetsville more than doubles as visitors flock to the slopes. Chet's Place offers cross-country ski and snowshoe rentals in winter, along with food and drinks year-round. Weekend visitors can often enjoy live music, and the fun continues through the summer—just with a little less snow. Chet's Place also has several rooms available to rent, though there is a two-night minimum stay, and they do not accept credit cards.
